Happy Star Trek Day!
“Star Trek” Day is held on Sept. 8, as this was the date in 1966 when the very first episode of “The Original Series” aired, entitled “The Man Trap.” Every series and movie of Star Trek has approximately 650 hours of view time, and it would take 27 days to watch the whole franchise uninterrupted. Since the series is 57 years old, there might be a few things that you may miss or not even heard of. I would love to share a few facts about the series you may not know about on this particular day.
1. A lot of Star Trek technology has become a reality.
Since the Tv Show is pretty old, it is astonishing to witness the technologies we currently use in our daily lives, such as Bluetooth devices (earpieces worn by Uhura and Spock), mobile phones (every communicator in the show), and even voice recognition software. In the series, there is a fictional object called Tricorders which has the function of data analysis and data recording. The ‘’Tri’’ word represents the functions of recording, perceiving, and calculating. These tricorders have become the LOCAD-PTS, a portable biological lab used by NASA.
2. There have been more than 125 Star Trek-related video games
Since 1971, more than 125 videogames based on or inspired by the Star Trek series have been created, beginning with a text game written in BASIC in 1971, a standup arcade game in 1972, and later early computer and gaming systems like the Commodore 64 and Atari 5200 through to modern PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Just like the vast impact that Star Trek made on the movie industry and the sci-fi universe, the franchise also has a massive audience in the gaming industry.
3. Stephen Hawking is the only person to play himself on Star Trek
The appearance happens in the episode “Descent,” where Data, Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, and Stephen Hawking are playing poker. Hawking is pretty much the jokester, while Newton is a total buzzkill. You can find out who wins the game by watching one of the most epic scenes on YouTube.
I’m sure there are millions of discussions, opinions, facts, and arguments about the franchise, and we would love to hear more exciting perspectives from you! Until then, peace.
