Food Photography Tips for Aspiring Foodie Influencers

With the increasing number of people feeling the need to photograph and share what they eat, food photography has suddenly become a hot topic in the last few years. For the most appetizing shots, let’s check out some food photography tips that you can use for your foodie contents.

Essential Food Photography Tips for Foodie Influencers

Tell a story

We’re bombarded with an abundance of food photographs each day, whether they’re on our screens or on billboard ads. Seeing as we’re constantly surrounded, it wouldn’t be too far off to say that we’re all a bit desensitized when it comes to pictures of food. If you want the audience to stop scrolling for a closer look, you need to stand out.

One great way of doing that, is to take your food photography beyond boring shots of static plates. Instead, try to tell a story with every one. You can drape a napkin as if someone just left the table, or pick at the food with a fork for a touch of life.

Opt for side lighting

If you’ve had any basic photography training, you’ve probably been told to position the main light source right behind you. While that lighting creates wonders for smooth portraits, we need a bit more texture to make food look appetizing. Having the light coming from one of the sides ensures that.

Use human elements

It’s a fact that photographs with at least some human elements perform way better in terms of engagement. Now, you don’t have to turn them into selfies but even the slightest human touch certainly helps. Just add some action. Have someone sprinkle stuff, or shoot them carving into the steak.

Invest in a tripod

If you’re going to be incorporating human elements into your photographs, you might want to be able to set the camera down at some point. A tripod works wonders in allowing you to manipulate the scene comfortably while the camera is already ready to shoot.

Be on the lookout for potential props

One thing a good food photographer needs a lot of is props. While those labeled as photography props can be quite expensive, at the end of the day we’re talking about tableware. Try to visit a thrift shop every now and then and see what you can find there.

Learn about photography basics

If you’re going to be dabbling in any sort of photography, you’re going to need to know the basics. You don’t need to take an extensive course though, just try to familiarize yourself with shutter, ISO, and aperture; and have a basic grasp of light, composition and depth of field.

Use an editing software

Even though everyone’s all about the “unfiltered” shots these days, every photo needs to be edited one way or the other. You can check out Adobe Lightroom for a professional solution, or check out mobile tools like Snapseed. Edit to your heart’s desire, (just don’t maximize the saturation) and your photos will be one step closer to their true potential.
