In June 2017, Gina Martin noticed a man taking upskirt photos while she was at a music festival in London with her sister. Applying to the police following this incident, Martin was told that there was not much to be done. Learning that upskirting was not classified as sexual assault under the laws of England and Wales, Martin started a campaign for a change.
I have been ~BURSTING~ to tell you all this: The Government is with us!! @LuzyFrazerMP met with me, @ryantwhelan and @Wera_Hobhouse this week and the Gov. is well and truly committed to closing the gap in the law. They are passionately backing my campaign and our bill! 😭🍾 pic.twitter.com/BOzZrBrEj5

With the #StopSkirtingTheIssue campaign she launched, Matin received support from more than 110,000 people to criminalize upskirting. She then took her campaign to the government to turn these signatures into legislation. After two years of hard work and much debate, Martin managed to change the law in England and Wales. Now, under the new legislation in these countries, those sentenced can receive up to two years in prison.
