We came together with Leyla Salavatova, Jonathan Kubben Quiñonez, Alex the Supercar Blondie, and Gabe Erwin to talk about social media and audience growth. Watch the video for the full panel or read along for the highlights!
Jonathan, You’re giving a speech called “Why marketers are wrong about influencer marketing”. What is the point youre trying to make here?
Jonathan: The major problem is that the ones who are in charge of taking marketing decisions in big companies usually are not millennials. They don’t know anything about cell phones. They want us, influencers, to show things and say “Hey, buy this”, but there’s a big difference. We need to communicate that without words and that’s what makes it authentic.
What is the future of social media?
Jonathan: It’s really difficult to predict where it’s going. Definitely going to be videos… We will read a little bit less.
Alex: I don’t know which new platforms there will be in a year. However, videos are the most important thing to grow right now. It always has a huge potential to get millions of views.
Content is everything to grow an audience, it is essential but still not everything, right? What else is important?
Alex: No, it is everything if you are not well-known for something else. People will follow you because they know you but if you’re not an actor or singer or something like that you have to be creating interesting content to grow. You need to create different, entertaining, interesting content otherwise no one will ever see you. If every influencer and content creator gave you a shout out, it still wouldn’t help you grow unless you’ve got content that people want to see. They would visit your profile but if you’re not offering anything different they will not follow.
Is the comedy niche saturated on social media?
Gabe : There are so many different creators within the comedy niche and there are so many different forms of comedy. There are certain elements that all comedy videos have in common where you feel like a joke is going to have this punchline. But it is not about the joke itself it is all about the delivery.
